Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco X. Stork
“The term “cognitive disorder” implies there is something wrong with the way I think or the way I perceive reality. I perceive reality just fine. Sometimes I perceive more of reality than others.”
There’s so much in the news these days about the mysteries of the autism spectrum, many may wonder what it might be like to step into the mind of someone with one of these disorders. Meet Marcelo, diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. At 17, he has led a sheltered life at a special school where he has come to feel extremely comfortable. His father, well intentioned but ambitious, wants to challenge him to do more, so Marcelo spends a summer working in the mailroom at his Dad’s law firm where he learns hard lessons about competition, jealousy, anger, desire and surprisingly, begins to connect with the real world.
